Post-pandemic, the workplace will likely never be the same. The state, like any other employer, is trying to find the right balance between remote and in-person work for its employees.

With millions of square feet of office space in state owned buildings and an increasing number of remote or hybrid workers is the state efficiently using our tax dollars. Tonight investigates Cullen Browder examines the struggle to serve the people of this state and meet the needs of employees who demand more flexibility. There's a household discount. If you and a spouse have the same policy post pandemic, the state workplace will likely never be the same. What these agencies need from their workspaces is in a state of flux and we're trying to keep up with that while many jobs can't be done remotely like patrolling our roads, running our prisons and state hospitals, more and more work can be done without coming to a state building with more people working remotely our state buildings and offices being used efficiently right now. That's a great question. And what we're finding is it agrees there are varying degrees with it. Department of Administration, Chief Deputy Secretary Mark Edwards oversees state buildings, state agencies have different missions and so one solution that works for, one probably might not work for the other. One w investigates found that by surveying various agencies the Department of Public Instruction reports, more than 90% of its employees working or fully remote commerce, which shares a building with DPI reports. 63% teleworking contrast that with adult correction where that number is less than 4% health and human services, the state's largest agency now estimates 20% of employees can work at least partially remote, a key recruiting tool at a time. It's hard to hire. We've certainly embraced remote work in a way that we didn't before the pandemic D HHS Secretary Cody Kinsley points out the vast majority of his 18,000 positions must be on site for caregiving, lab work or inspections for the rest. What we're doing at the department is trying to be intentional. When do we need to be together for what purposes? How do we make the most strategic value of that? When does the flexibility of being remote serve the same purpose we're here to serve the public? And that's why I think it's important that we have people here every day. Insurance commissioner Mike Causey is no fan of remote work, although he relented to allow one day of telework per week. My feeling is that people are more productive in the office and you have that the camaraderie while some state offices have thinned. The Department of Insurance is feeling the squeeze. Do I moved into the building down in 2017, a more than $40 million renovation for them? Well, Now, the state fire marshal and engineering teams have been cleared out of two floors to make way for the state Auditor's office. Did this decision make sense to you? No, it did not. To me it was very disruptive. Typically the Department of Administration guides decisions on state building usage. But in an unusual move, the General Assembly's legislative services office is reaching well beyond these walls, ordering agencies to pay for efficiency studies, doss cost $100,000 the signals it was sending to us was sending people home, you know, get more people to work from home. In addition to the Albemarle shakeup, lawmakers plan to level the Department of Administration building and replace it with a complex for unc general government, public instruction, community colleges, commerce and as for existing buildings, balancing use with remote work is an ongoing challenge. That's exactly what do you say to taxpayers who may be concerned that buildings are not getting the use. That's the most efficient. That's our mission and that's what we're making sure that we're doing right now with our time and our studies to make sure that these buildings are being used efficiently. Sol investigates requested. Other workplace usage studies were still waiting on that request. Interestingly, we also found despite a huge decrease in office use during and post pandemic, most state building electric bills didn't go down the reason. One reason, expensive upgrades to increase air circulation to protect workers who were in the office. I was wondering about that Cullen. Thank you so much.

I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilm in the WRL severe weather center. Pretty nice weather today. A mix of sun and clouds with temperatures close to normal for this time of year. We reach 80 degrees in Raleigh and Durham, 79 in Rocky Mount. 81 for the high temperature in Fayetteville. If you want to have dinner outside this evening, it's going to be a lovely evening to do that at 7 p.m. We're in the mid seventies, mostly sunny skies, low seventies at 8 p.m. and then we're back down to the sixties by nine o'clock and certainly no rain in the forecast for today. For the next three days. The weather stays pretty quiet and the big story will be the warming of our temperatures 80 today, 84 Tuesday and then 88 for the high temperature on Wednesday. Once we get to the holiday weekend, that's when things turn unsettled and temperatures will drop a little bit. We have scattered storms in the forecast for Friday, especially Friday night. Saturday, scattered storms possible at any point in time, just a few spotty showers and storms Sunday and then we're back to some scattered storm chances on Monday, no day looks like a washout as of now. So keep checking back in and we'll have a better idea on the exact timing and amounts once we get to around Thursday or so, here's a look at Futurecast. This is for Thursday morning. It's a dry start to the day. But then Thursday night we have some scattered showers. So most of Thursday is dry. It's not until very late. We could see a few showers. Friday morning looks dry. Maybe you're hitting the road early on Friday for the long holiday weekend, it looks dry for most of the state. And then once we get to Friday evening, it's the western half of the state that has some storms for us. It'll be Friday night, an overnight Friday in early Saturday, we'll have a good opportunity for some rain and storms. Saturday morning, rain chances for us fairly slim and really across most of North Carolina rain, chances look pretty low Saturday morning. But then we get into the afternoon and evening, the peak heating and we'll have some scattered showers and thunderstorms. Sunday morning. We could have some rain along the North Carolina coast and then just some hit showers and storms across a good part of the state. But a lot of dry time as well. Monday for Memorial Day, we'll have some hit and miss showers and storms as well. So it's very quiet for the next few days with temperatures warming up. We're in the low nineties by Thursday and then temperatures back off a little bit over the weekend. But again, that does come with the potential for some scattered showers and storms.
