A 2014 NOW SAYS FROM THE COCHRANE LIBRARY, LOOK AT 19 DIFFERENT STUDIES. THEY DETERMINED H STUDIES FOUND ADS HAD NO EFFECT ON DRUG USE. THE OTHERS HAD KIND OF MIXED RESULTS, BUT THE RESEARCHERS CONCLUDED BY SAYING CAUTION IS NEEDED IN DISSEMINATING MASS MEDIA CAMPAIGNS TACKLING DRUG USE, MEANING THEY COULD DO MORE HARM. THEN THEY DO GOOD. THIS MIGHT NOT. WERE YOU? YOU MIGHT SAY, DAN, LISTEN, I DON'T RELY ON CATCHY SLOGANS ON SIGNS TO TEACH MY KIDS. I GOT THE PARENT I WAS A TEENAGER, WANTS A LEVEL WITH THEM. I'LL SHARE MY STORIES. MY EXPERIENCES. ACTUALLY DON'T DO THAT. THERE'S A 2013 STUDY PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL HUMAN COMMUNICATION RESEARCH AND THEY FOUND, QUOTE, EVEN WHEN THERE IS A LEARNING LESSON, SUCH MESSAGES MAY HAVE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES FOR EARLY ADOLESCENT CHILDREN AND QUOTE, CHILDREN WHOSE PARENTS DID NOT DISCLOSE DRUG USE BUT DELIVERED A STRONG ANTI-DRUG MESSAGE WERE MORE LIKELY TO EXHIBIT ANTI-DRUG ATTITUDES IN THOSE KIDS. SO MAYBE DON'T GIVE THEM THE WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE ROUTINE BECAUSE IT MAY MAKE THEM MORE CURIOUS THAN CAUTIOUS. SAME GOES FOR THOSE HEAVY HANDED. MESSAGE IS LIKE SAY NO, AND DON'T DO DRUGS. SHE WITHOUT CLEAR FACTS. THOSE MESSAGES CAN HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT. LOOK, TEENAGERS MIGHT NOT HAVE SOME MEDICAL DEGREE, BUT THEY'RE NOT DUMB. THEY KNOW FRYING EGG LIKE THIS IS NOT WHAT THE BRAIN LOOKS LIKE ON 2013 ARTICLE UNPOPULAR SIGNS, PUT IT THIS WAY. QUOTE, THE ADS CAN DRAW ATTENTION TO A GAP AND WHAT THE VIEWER KNOWS ABOUT TRUCKS MAKING THE MORE CURIOUS THE ADS BRING UP THE IMPLICIT QUESTION, SHOULD I DO TRUCKS? NOW? RESEARCH IS SHOWING THAT BRIDGING THE GAP WITH FACTS IS THE BEST PRACTICE ABOVE THE INFLUENCE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS. THEIR ADS MOSTLY SHOW WITH TEENS COULD BE DOING INSTEAD OF DOING DRUGS SHOWING A KID MISSING OUT ON FUN WITH FRIENDS BECAUSE HE'S TOO BUSY BEING LAZY AND. 2011 STUDY AND PREVENTION SCIENCE FOUND THIS CAMPAIGN COULD BE CONNECTED TO REDUCED MARIJUANA USE THE TRUTH. CAMPAIGN HAD SOME SIMILAR RESULTS. THEIR ADS SHOW THE OFTEN BRUTAL REALITIES OF SMOKING. HOW HARD IT IS TO QUIT THE MEDICAL CONDITIONS THAT COME AFTER THE 2009 STUDY IN THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE FOUND THIS CAMPAIGN WAS A VIABLE STRATEGY TO PREVENT YOUTH SMOKING. STANFORD IS ACTUALLY ROLLING OUT A PROGRAM JUST LIKE THIS. IT'S CALLED SAFETY FIRST. THEY STILL KILL. TELL KIDS NOT TO USE DRUGS, BUT THEY GO A STEP FURTHER. THEY GET SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS ABOUT HOW WE'D IS DIFFERENT FROM COCAINE IS DIFFERENT FROM TOBACCO IS DIFFERENT FROM ALCOHOL. HOW WITHDRAWALS WORK? WHAT A BRAIN ACTUALLY DOES WHEN SOMEONE USES DRUGS. THE TALK ABOUT HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN USE AND ABUSE AND HOW TO RESPOND TO AN EMERGENCY NEW ALSO THE PROGRAM LIKE THIS, THE CHARLOTTE MECKLENBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT. THAT'S RIGHT. FRANKLIN PERSON, JOHNSTON AND CUMBERLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS ALL SO ROSE THE KERRY THIS NOR CAN STOP WHICH BRINGS US BACK TO THOSE STUDENTS AT UNC SHE THEY'VE BEEN HANDING OUT TESTS TRIPS THAT CAN DETECT FENTANYL AND OTHER SUBSTANCES. I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilm in the WRL severe weather center. Pretty nice weather today. A mix of sun and clouds with temperatures close to normal for this time of year. We reach 80 degrees in Raleigh and Durham, 79 in Rocky Mount. 81 for the high temperature in Fayetteville. If you want to have dinner outside this evening, it's going to be a lovely evening to do that at 7 p.m. We're in the mid seventies, mostly sunny skies, low seventies at 8 p.m. and then we're back down to the sixties by nine o'clock and certainly no rain in the forecast for today. For the next three days. The weather stays pretty quiet and the big story will be the warming of our temperatures 80 today, 84 Tuesday and then 88 for the high temperature on Wednesday. Once we get to the holiday weekend, that's when things turn unsettled and temperatures will drop a little bit. We have scattered storms in the forecast for Friday, especially Friday night. Saturday, scattered storms possible at any point in time, just a few spotty showers and storms Sunday and then we're back to some scattered storm chances on Monday, no day looks like a washout as of now. So keep checking back in and we'll have a better idea on the exact timing and amounts once we get to around Thursday or so, here's a look at Futurecast. This is for Thursday morning. It's a dry start to the day. But then Thursday night we have some scattered showers. So most of Thursday is dry. It's not until very late. We could see a few showers. Friday morning looks dry. Maybe you're hitting the road early on Friday for the long holiday weekend, it looks dry for most of the state. And then once we get to Friday evening, it's the western half of the state that has some storms for us. It'll be Friday night, an overnight Friday in early Saturday, we'll have a good opportunity for some rain and storms. Saturday morning, rain chances for us fairly slim and really across most of North Carolina rain, chances look pretty low Saturday morning. But then we get into the afternoon and evening, the peak heating and we'll have some scattered showers and thunderstorms. Sunday morning. We could have some rain along the North Carolina coast and then just some hit showers and storms across a good part of the state. But a lot of dry time as well. Monday for Memorial Day, we'll have some hit and miss showers and storms as well. So it's very quiet for the next few days with temperatures warming up. We're in the low nineties by Thursday and then temperatures back off a little bit over the weekend. But again, that does come with the potential for some scattered showers and storms.
