Crabtree Creek is a tributary of the Neuse River that is notorious for flooding.

here at home, Even just a few inches of rain can mean trouble for Crabtree Creek and Raleigh from impassable roads to submerge cars. It's an area that floods frequently and it really doesn't take a tropical system to be able to do that tonight. We're going to take a look at the city's efforts to prevent the kind of flooding we have seen in that area all too often. Wr joe fisher is live along the creek near Crabtree Valley Mall with what he has learned, joe Gerald and Deborah. You can take a look behind me at what is a very calm Crabtree Creek right now. But this red pole here shows just how high the water got during Hurricane Matthew in 2016. If you walk with me, you could see this poll. This black one which even higher was from an unnamed storms. Even storms without names cause trouble along Crabtree Creek. The city says the reality is that this area will likely always flood, but right now they're working to minimize the impact. Yes. So I think this one was Fran. These towering poles on the banks of Crabtree Creek are a visible reminder of past storms. Crabtree Creek is notorious for flooding quick rising waters blanketing neighborhoods. You can see it rise up onto the, onto the streets and roads right in the middle of a growing city. There's been a lot of development as we've added those hard surfaces, We're creating more runoff and that's going to make flooding worse over a long period of time, Crabtree Creek runs from the Kerry Morris ville area through the city, Lake, Lynn and Shelley Lake helped to store some of the water upstream. So there's a big improvement from them, but they haven't stopped it. Wayne Miles is Raleigh's stormwater manager. I'm afraid to say it is always going to flood with climate change. These storms are coming more quickly. Unfortunately, in july Raleigh tightened restrictions preventing any new construction on flood plains. It comes after years of voluntary buyouts in which the city purchased and demolished buildings along capital boulevard. If you put a building in the in the floodplain, it takes away storage from that flood water and can make flooding downstream worse because the water's gotta go somewhere. David corn ao lives in five points. Honestly, it's better than it has been in the past. Like, you know, growing up here like it used to be like a really big impact. He believes the city's efforts are working, including more vegetation on floodplains to capture more water. Anything we can do to reduce the amount of runoff that goes straight into the pipes straight into the creek is going to help mitigate the flooding events. And because the flooding is really here to stay, the city is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in an early warning system that is a network of rain gauges and cameras. So the city can really predict serious flooding hours ahead of time that will allow them to notify the public quicker and to close roads sooner. Gerald. It is a serious challenge. I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilm in the WRL severe weather center. Pretty nice weather today. A mix of sun and clouds with temperatures close to normal for this time of year. We reach 80 degrees in Raleigh and Durham, 79 in Rocky Mount. 81 for the high temperature in Fayetteville. If you want to have dinner outside this evening, it's going to be a lovely evening to do that at 7 p.m. We're in the mid seventies, mostly sunny skies, low seventies at 8 p.m. and then we're back down to the sixties by nine o'clock and certainly no rain in the forecast for today. For the next three days. The weather stays pretty quiet and the big story will be the warming of our temperatures 80 today, 84 Tuesday and then 88 for the high temperature on Wednesday. Once we get to the holiday weekend, that's when things turn unsettled and temperatures will drop a little bit. We have scattered storms in the forecast for Friday, especially Friday night. Saturday, scattered storms possible at any point in time, just a few spotty showers and storms Sunday and then we're back to some scattered storm chances on Monday, no day looks like a washout as of now. So keep checking back in and we'll have a better idea on the exact timing and amounts once we get to around Thursday or so, here's a look at Futurecast. This is for Thursday morning. It's a dry start to the day. But then Thursday night we have some scattered showers. So most of Thursday is dry. It's not until very late. We could see a few showers. Friday morning looks dry. Maybe you're hitting the road early on Friday for the long holiday weekend, it looks dry for most of the state. And then once we get to Friday evening, it's the western half of the state that has some storms for us. It'll be Friday night, an overnight Friday in early Saturday, we'll have a good opportunity for some rain and storms. Saturday morning, rain chances for us fairly slim and really across most of North Carolina rain, chances look pretty low Saturday morning. But then we get into the afternoon and evening, the peak heating and we'll have some scattered showers and thunderstorms. Sunday morning. We could have some rain along the North Carolina coast and then just some hit showers and storms across a good part of the state. But a lot of dry time as well. Monday for Memorial Day, we'll have some hit and miss showers and storms as well. So it's very quiet for the next few days with temperatures warming up. We're in the low nineties by Thursday and then temperatures back off a little bit over the weekend. But again, that does come with the potential for some scattered showers and storms.
