As we approach the one-year anniversary of Floyd's death, the new WRAL Documentary "The Skin We're In" takes a look at racism through the personal stories of people of color who've experienced racial discrimination first hand. 

The killing of George Floyd ignited a national and international movement for racial justice. It also sparked a renewed examination of how racism continues to permeate so many aspects of our society.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death, the new WRAL Documentary "The Skin We’re In" takes a look at racism through the personal stories of people of color who’ve experienced racial discrimination first hand.

Unlike Floyd’s murder and the other sensational stories that people see in the news, most of these stories involve people of color experiencing discrimination in just ordinary, everyday activities exposing just how prevalent racism continues to be.

In the documentary the people telling their own personal stories of racial discrimination also share their ideas about how the problem of racism can be solved in our society.

Mikaya Thurmond experienced subtle racial discrimination when trying to rent an apartment in Raleigh.

one of the hardest things I've ever experienced as a black woman was when I moved to Raleigh, I didn't know anyone and looked at a number of apartments, spoke to people on the phone. They were very kind. When I came in and met those people in person apartment after apartment showed me a different side. Uh I was given different reasons that I couldn't be shown certain apartments. Sometimes the key was lost. Other times, no one could actually be available to take me inside. So when I got to a third apartment, I was willing to ask why and the customer service representative told me it's not like you could afford it. Anyway, I was in shock. I didn't say anything back and I just left and I remember going back to my hotel room with my mom collapsing on the floor and crying. It makes me sad to think that this is what happens to this day. It makes me emotional and hard to process that. This is what things are like Right now, I'm grateful that I was able to reach out to people who were able to find me a place to live. But it happens every day, no matter what job you have, no matter what you look like, Some people will see you as different.

Gerald Owens relates an experience where clothes and a fancy car failed to keep a couple from judging his character.

I remember one time I was with my brother up in Pittsburgh, he's a doctor of Internal Medicine. We were going to a graduation party, both dressed like I am right now, driving in my brother's very expensive car. We pull up to a light two elderly white people in the car next to us, locked their doors and raise their windows. As soon as we pulled up next to them. We both laughed. But it's it's sad really because people are judging us based on the color of our skin and not who we might be. I think that what you have to remember is it's not you. It's the people who are judging you or who they think you are.

WRAL anchor Ken Smith recalls the "emotionally crushing" experience of being called a racial slur by a child. 

I remember the first time I was called the N. Word to my face. Just moved to Tampa florida from the Virgin Islands, this wide eyed kid looking for new opportunities. We were the only black family in this little enclave uh just outside Brandon florida. And I just bought my new car and I was outside washing the car at the time And across the way there was a woman um surrounded by maybe three or 4 Children. And then a little boy started walking toward me. Can't be no more than six years old. Just walking towards me with the sweetest smile on his face. And I thought I was living in a really friendly neighborhood. And as soon as he got up close I looked and I smiled at him and he looked at me with that sweet smile and called me the N. Word. And I remember how emotionally crushing that was for me. I remember feeling the weight of of that moment a six year old calling me the N. Word And at the time I was 18 years old and I still remember the weight of being called the N. Word. And as I look back on it now, it's not so much that the weight of it because we can carry that weight. It's because I realized that This was a six year old kid, A six year old kid being told to walk across the street and call that little black boy the inward and I thought, have we lost another generation to racism?

Ronda Taylor Bullock is the Executive Director of WEARE which stands for "working to extend anti-racism education." It's a non-profit organization in Durham that does implicit bias and anti-racism training. Bullock talks about implicit bias and how the training works. 

implicit bias is the thoughts and beliefs that people have that our subconscious and oftentimes these biases are negative beliefs sometimes rooted in stereotypes, um, that people hold about different groups of people about religions, about race, about gender, there in our subconscious And so we hold these beliefs and oftentimes were not aware that we have them, but then we act on those beliefs and oftentimes this results in harm. We try to help people understand and sit with the different parts of their own identities and we also help people to understand that we have blind spots based on how we identify. So while race may be very real imprisoned for me, because I identify as a black woman for someone who identifies as white race may not be that prominent for them because they've never been the target of discrimination and that creates a blind spot. And so we help people to understand their identities, their blind spots. And then we help people to understand that we are conditioned to believe certain things about people who are similar, similar to us, but also different from us and we try to make that visible because oftentimes because biases are implicit, they aren't that visible or present for us and we try to make visible the invisible so that people can be aware of the harm that we might be causing. We also help people connect their biases and blonde spots um, to systemic harm. So for example, in education, um, educators are by and large, they identify as white. Most white people on a day to day basis, do not think about race, but they're working with Children who are Children of color. Will race is very present and very real. And so, um educators may misdiagnosed or miss describe black child's behavior or brown child's behavior and not understanding that they could be having some type of racialized experience based off of what's going on in society. And so while a child might be resistant to learning and show like um disruptive behaviors and educator might label them as defiant or troublemaker when they can't, they don't have the ability to process while the child might be going through something different that I'm not aware of or that's not visible to me. And I think that contributes to like the school to prison pipeline and the discipline disparities that black and brown Children experience in the school setting.

Educator Ronda Taylor Bullock helps people understand racial 'blind spots'

Ed Gaskins is a Raleigh attorney who went through implicit bias training through Greensboro's Racial Equity Institute. Gaskins says the training changed his perspective on race and racism. 

I took of course, the basic purpose of which is to use data to show the continued existence of systemic racism in America today, despite all the efforts. Mhm, Particularly beginning in 1965 to eradicate it. And the course looks at education. It looks at health care, it looks at hiring and employment practices. It looks at education. It looks at virtually every aspect of american society. And the data shows that the only thing that accounts for the significant differences in the way people are treated in each of these areas is race. And in every instance, the white race has an advantage over Uh any other color, particularly black. Well, it was eye opening in the sense that particularly since the Civil Rights Act of 1965, my impression had been that significant action had been taken to overcome systemic racism. And I'm not saying there hasn't been a significant effort, but it is clear from the data that exists even today that that effort has not succeeded in in erasing the racial differences that have been Built into American society beginning with slavery in the 1600s until at least the Civil Rights Act of 1965. Regardless of everything we've done, there is a white advantage in America. Today. If I were a person of color in America, I think I would be angry that I'm always at a disadvantage. Uh, no matter what the field is, whether it's in hiring an education in finance, when I go to borrow money in all of these things, I'm not treated equally. I'm not treated the same as a white person in the same circumstances just because I'm black, I am at a disadvantage. And I think that would make me angry because it isn't fair. I have friends who say, well actually it is advantageous to be black or a person of color or minority because all of these things have been done To two advantage them. But I don't care how many things have been done. The data today shows that they haven't been effective in overcoming hundreds of years of legalized systemic racism in America. I am much more sympathetic to people of color who are complaining about the existence of systemic racism and how they have been treated. And I want to let my the people of color I'm friends with know that I now understand some of what they have been living with throughout their lives because I didn't really understand it before. I didn't I didn't really think about it or if I thought about it, I didn't believe it exists to the extent that I am now convinced it does.

Implicit bias training sheds light on systemic racism

Discriminate: to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit.

Implicit Bias: a prejudice that is present but not consciously held or recognized.

Example: "Research shows that the majority of people have an implicit bias that associates science and technology with gender, so from a very young age, girls are not encouraged to pursue these careers," she said.

Microagression: a comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group (such as a racial minority).

Example: A digital photo project run by a Fordham University student about "racial microaggressions" features minority students holding up signs with comments like "You're really pretty … for a dark-skin girl."

Prejudice: an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge.

Racism: a belief that race is a fundamental determinate of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race​.

Stereotype: a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment.

IDEALLY THE PUBLIC TRUSTS THAT THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY IS DOING WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO JUST TAKING THE EVIDENCE AND APPLYING IT TO THE LAW AND REACHING THAT DECISION. BUT THERE IS CERTAINLY IF AND AS WE MOVE IN A DIRECTION OF WANTING TO MAKE SURE THE PUBLIC TRUST IN THE SYSTEM IS PARAMOUNT. THIS IS A DISCUSSION YOU ARE GOING TO SEE CONTINUE AS WE GO FORWARD. >>> I THINK THAT IS A VERY GOOD POINT THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE SOMETHING WE ARE TALKING A LOT MORE ABOUT. IT COULD BE CONSIDERED A THREAT. PROFESSOR FIELDS IS THAT IN YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE LAW? >> NO IT IS NOT. DA ANDREW WOMBLE -- BASED ON THE  BODY CAMERA VIDEO HE IS WRONG ON THE FACTS. WITH A 44 SECONDS IT WAS RELEASED BEFORE IT WAS CLEAR MR. BROWN WAS SLOWLY MOVING HIS VEHICLE AWAY FROM THE FIVE POLICE OFFICERS WHO CAME RUNNING AT HOME. WITH ASSAULT WEAPONS POINTED AT HIM. HE WAS TRYING TO EVADE ARREST. HE WAS NOT TRYING TO RUN THEM OVER. IT WAS CLEAR FROM THE BODY CAMERA FOOTAGE RELEASED THAT 13 OF THE 14 SHOTS WERE FIRED AFTER THE CART WAS CLEARLY POINTED AWAY FROM THE OFFICERS AND AFTER ALL FIVE OF THEM HAD CLEARLY MOVED OUT OF THE WAY OF THE VEHICLE. HE WAS NOT AN IMMEDIATE THREAT AT THAT POINT. MR. ANDREW WOMBLE RESPECTFULLY IS DEAD WRONG ON THE LAW HERE. SAYING THE LAW DOES NOT CARE WHETHER THE CAR IS STATIONARY AND FORWARDS BACKWARDS OR SIDEWAYS. THE LAW SAYS REASONABLE FORCE INCLUDING DEADLY FORCE MAY ONLY BE USED AS A REASONABLE TO DO SO. AND THAT INCLUDES WITH SOMEBODY IN THE IMMEDIATE THREAT TO THE OFFICERS OR OTHERS INCLUDING USING A CAR IS A DEADLY WEAPON. MS. WHEN MR. BROWN IS MOVING SLOWLY AWAY FROM THE OFFICERS HE IS NO LONGER AN IMMEDIATE THREAT. WHEN PRESSED ON THIS BY REPORTERS MR. TRANSIT -- ANDREW WOMBLE SAID THEY WERE DUTY- BOUND TO KEEP THEIR ARREST WARRANT  MR. BROWN WAS EVADING ARREST IS ACTUALLY TURNING NORTH CAROLINA AND SUPREME COURT LAW ON ITS HEAD. SAYING OFFICERS TO SHOOT TO KILL. THAT IS NEVER BEEN THE CASE IN NORTH CAROLINA. THAT HAS NEVER BEEN THE CASE IN THE UNITED STATES. WHAT IS MOST TROUBLING -- HE CITES ONE CASE IN SUPPORT OF THE PROPOSITION. 2014 CASE. SUPREME COURT SAID IT WAS JUSTIFIED FOR OFFICERS TO FIRE THEIR WEAPON INTO A VEHICLE THAT WAS FLEEING THE SCENE. IN THAT CASE. THE SUSPECT IN QUESTION WAS DRIVING OVER 100 MILES PER HOUR ON A BUSY SECTION OF INTERSTATE 40 AND TENNESSEE. WHICH HE NEARLY STRUCK 29 PASSENGERS. THE SUPREME COURT SAID THAT PUBLIC SAFETY RISK JUSTIFIED THE OFFICERS ACTIONS. THAT IS SO OBVIOUSLY NOT WHAT WE HAVE GOING ON IN THIS CASE.>> PROFESSOR JOYNER DO YOU EMPHASIZE WITH HOW DIFFICULT IT IS TO BE ABLE TO JUDGE WHETHER AN OFFICER FEELS LIKE THEY ARE IN IMMINENT DANGER? >> IT IS A DIFFICULT DECISION. THERE IS NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. THAT IS WHAT YOU SIGNED UP FOR. YOU ARE TRAINED AND YOU HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MAKING THOSE HARD DECISIONS. BUT THOSE DECISIONS HAVE TO BE BASED ON THE LAW. PROFESSOR FIELDS CORRECTLY LAID OUT WITH THE LAW IS. EVERY POLICE OFFICER SHOULD KNOW WHAT THE LAW IS. NOT ONLY SHOULD THEY KNOW WHAT THE LAW IS THEY ARE DUTY BROWN TO FOLLOW. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY MORE EVIDENCE THEY ARE PRESUMABLY IN AN INVESTIGATION OF THIS NATURE THERE WOULD BE STATEMENTS FROM OFFICERS AND ANYONE ELSE WHO MAY HAVE WITNESSED IT. THERE IS MORE VIDEO TO BE SEEN. FOR ANY OF US TO MAKE A STATEMENT TONIGHT AS TO WHAT ALL THIS INVESTIGATION REVEALS IS SOMEWHAT PREMATURE. I THINK WHAT WE DID SEE IN THE VIDEO AND WHAT ANDREW WOMBLE RELEASED , I THINK IT IS AN INTERESTING QUESTION AS TO WHETHER HE HAS THE AUTHORITY TO RELEASE THAT AS HE MAKES A DECISION WITHIN THE CASE. CERTAINLY THE STATUTE THAT GOVERNS RELEASE OF VIDEO IN THESE TYPES OF MATTERS DOES PROVIDE IT TO THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY. WHETHER THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY THEN AND TRYING TO USE IT IN SOME WAY AND MAKING A CASE DECISION, I THINK THE STATUTE IS UNCLEAR ON THAT FRONT. I THINK THAT REALLY IT COMES DOWN TO WHAT POINT AND WHAT IS THE APPROPRIATE POINT IN TIME IN WHICH THESE VIDEOS ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. AGAIN THAT IS AN ISSUE OF GREAT DEBATE WITHIN THE COUNTRY. IN WAKE COUNTY WHERE WE'VE GOT OVER 1 MILLION PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT A JURY POOL BEING TAINTED WE TRY TO GET THE VIDEO OUT THE ENTIRE VIDEO AS SOON AS WE CAN BE ASSURE THE INVESTIGATION IS NOT GOING TO BE JEOPARDIZED. THAT IS A DIFFERENT DETERMINATION THAN A SMALLER COMMUNITY SUCH AS THAT. THIS WHOLE ISSUE OF RELEASE OF THE VIDEO RELEASE OF THE FULL VIDEO I THINK IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN IT GIVES THE PUBLIC SOME SENSE OF THE FACT THAT TRANSPARENCY IS GOING TO BE WHAT RULES THE DAY. AND THAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO TRY TO HOLD THE BALL BY SHOWING POINT -- PARTS OF THE VIDEO. HOPEFULLY AT SOME POINT THIS ENTIRE VIDEO WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE. >> AT THIS POINT THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS ALREADY MADE HIS DECISION. WE HAVE TO TAKE A QUICK BREAK. I HAVE A QUESTION FOR -- WHAT ANDREW WOMBLE HAD TO SAY AFTER THE BREAK. >>> WELCOME BACK. I WOULD LIKE TO BEGIN WITH YOU. WHEN DA ANDREW WOMBLE WAS ASKED WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD DO IF THEY ARE UPSET WITH HIS DECISION HE SIMPLY SAID RESPOND AT THE BALLOT BOX. ESSENTIALLY SAYING THAT IS THE ONLY RECOURSE AT THIS POINT. IS THAT HOW YOU SEE IT? >> ABSOLUTELY NOT. ABSOLUTELY NOT. RESPONDING AT THE BALLOT BOX IS AN IMPORTANT WAY FOR US TO WRITE THIS SYSTEM. IT IS NOT THE ONLY WAY FOR US TO FIX IT. WHAT WE NEED IS HONESTY. WE NEED HONESTY FROM ALL OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. NOT JUST CAREFULLY CRAFTED RESPONSES THAT SAY NOTHING. BUT HONEST RESPONSES THAT ARE BASED IN INTEGRITY AND IN THE TRUTH. >> TRUST COMES FROM HONESTY AND TRUTH. WE HAVE ALL HEARD HERE TODAY THAT THE LAW IS FLAT OUT --. AND OPPOSITE OF WHAT ANDREW WOMBLE USED TO JUSTIFY THE SHOOTING. WE NEED OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS THAT INCLUDES DISTRICT ATTORNEYS FROM ALL OVER THE STATE. AS WELL AS OUR ATTORNEY GENERAL TO SAY THAT OUT LOUD. AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY. WE NEED TO HOLD FOLKS WITHIN THE SYSTEM WHO USE THEIR POWER IN A WAY THAT IS RACIST AND THAT PERPETUATES THE RACIST SYSTEM THAT ARE DESIGNED AND UPHELD IN AMERICA. WE NEED OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO STAND UP AND CALL OUT WRONG ACTORS WHEN THEY SEE THEM. WE ALL CAN AGREE THAT THE LAW THAT ANDREW WOMBLE ARTICULATED IS FLAT OUT WRONG. I HAVE YET TO HEAR ANY ELECTED OFFICIAL SAY THAT. >> THAT IS WHAT WE NEED.>> I HEAR YOU AND I WONDER FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE HOW IS TRUST REPAIRED AT THIS POINT? >> TRUST IS REPAIRED WITH HONESTY. WITH TRUTH. WITH TRANSPARENCY. WE NEED THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE ELECTED OFFICIALS IN OUR STATE TO TELL THE TRUTH. THIS IS A MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE. AND YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT THIS MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE BECAUSE OF THE EGREGIOUS AND RACIST LAWS OF NORTH CAROLINA. AND THEN USE YOUR POWER AND YOUR INFLUENCE TO CHANGE THOSE LAWS TO CREATE A SYSTEM THAT IS MORE FAIR AND MORE JUST. IT IS NOT IT IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR THE CONFERENCE OF DISTRICT ATTORNEYS TO BE SILENT WHEN ONE OF THEIR MEMBERS SO GROSSLY MISSTATES THE LAW. HE IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THEM YET WE HAVE HEARD NOTHING.>> PROFESSOR FIELDS THE SHERIFF THAT THE OFFICERS ARE GOING TO BE DISCIPLINED. THEY WILL BE RETRAINED. DO YOU THINK THAT OPENS THEM UP TO CIVIL LIABILITY IF THE DA ALREADY SAID THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG? >> IT IS GOING TO BE A RELEVANT CONSIDERATION AS THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE CONTINUES TO CIVIL RIGHTS INVESTIGATION. MANY OF US ARE ASKING IF THEY ARE GOING TO BE DISCIPLINED HOW DOES THAT SQUARE WITH ANDREW WOMBLE'S CONCLUSION  THAT THE ACTIONS OF THE OFFICERS WAS JUSTIFIED? ANDREW WOMBLE DID NOT SAY IT IS INCONCLUSIVE. I CANNOT FIND EVIDENCE BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT THAT CHARGES THEM WITH A HOMICIDE CRIME. HE FOUND THEY WERE JUSTIFIED IN THEIR ACTIONS. IF THAT IS THE CASE WHY ARE THEY BEING INTERNALLY DISCIPLINED BY THE SHERIFF? DISTRICT ATTORNEY FREEMAN WAS RIGHT WHEN SHE SAID THE A's HAVE CLOSE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH POLICE OFFICERS. THAT IS NATURAL. THAT IS TRUE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. IT DOES NOT MEAN A CONFLICT OF INTEREST. THAT IS WHY CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM ADVOCATES AROUND THE COUNTRY WANT THE APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT SPECIAL PROSECUTORS FOR EVERY OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING TO SEE IF THERE IS POTENTIAL CRIMINAL POLICE MISCONDUCT. THE PRESS CONFERENCE WE SAW TUESDAY WAS DEFIANT, OFFENSIVE CONFRONTATIONAL AND LEGALLY INACCURATE ONLY GOING TO PUT FUEL ON THE FIRE FOR THAT TYPE OF REFORM. >>> I WONDER HOW ANDREW WOMBLE'S DECISION  MIGHT HAVE BEEN RECEIVED FROM THE PUBLIC IF THE PROCESS WERE JUST DIFFERENT. IF THOSE VIDEOS WERE OUT. IF THERE WAS TRANSPARENCY IN THE WAY THE PUBLIC WAS ASKING FOR DAY AFTER DAY. MAYBE THEY WOULD HAVE RECEIVED HIS CONCLUSION DIFFERENTLY. HOW DO YOU FEEL LIKE TRUST IS REPAIRED? HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO DO YOUR JOB IF THERE IS NO CONFIDENCE? >> IT IS VERY DIFFICULT. I THINK THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS. I THINK THE TRANSPARENCY IS IMPORTANT. I THINK BUILDING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS YOU CANNOT WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE INCIDENTS TO BE BUILDING THOSE RELATIONSHIPS AND BUILDING THE TRUST WITH YOUR COMMUNITY. YOU HAVE TO BE DOING THAT THROUGHOUT. IN RESPONSE TO SOME OF WHAT PROFESSOR FIELDS AND THE ATTORNEY SAID. THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION ABOUT THE VEHICLE BEING MOVING. THAT WAS DURING A QUESTION AND ANSWER PART OF MR. ANDREW WOMBLE'S PRESS CONFERENCE. THAT IS NOT THE SITUATION WE HAVE IN THIS CASE. I'M NOT PASSING JUDGMENT OR SAYING AS TO WHAT MY PARTICULAR OPINION ABOUT THAT DECISION IS. WHAT I WOULD SAY IS THAT SELECT ANSWER DOES NOT MEAN THAT IS THE STANDARD THAT HE APPLIED IN EVALUATING THIS CASE. AGAIN I THINK WE HAVE TO HAVE ALL OF THE INFORMATION IN THIS CASE. I THINK THAT COMES OUT OVER TIME. HOPEFULLY IT COMES OUT SOONER THAN LATER. AS PROFESSOR FIELDS HAVE SAID AND OTHERS THERE OF VARIOUS COMPONENTS. ANYTIME WE HAVE ONE OF THESE USE OF FORCE CASES THERE IS ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW AS TO WHETHER OFFICERS HAVE VIOLATED POLICY. AND FOR PERSONNEL PURPOSES. MAY BE SANCTIONED. THERE IS OFTEN A CIVIL RIGHTS INVESTIGATION WHICH WE BELIEVE IS ONGOING. BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. THERE IS RELATIVELY NARROW OR SPECIFIC COMPONENT THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS TO MAKE A DECISION ABOUT. WHETHER THE CRIMINAL LAW WAS VIOLATED. THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE HAD A DECISION RENDERED ON IN THIS CASE. BUT I THINK IN TERMS OF BUILDING TRUST THAT HAS TO BE HAPPENING WITH YOUR COMMUNITY ALL ALONG. IT HAPPENS THROUGH ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY. >>> I WANT TO TRANSITION AND PLAY A SOUNDBITE FROM AN INTERVIEW I HAD WITH GEORGE FLOYD'S COUSIN AFTER -- WAS CONVICTED OF HIS MURDER. >> WHAT IS SAYS JUSTICE FOR ALL THAT IS WHAT IT MEANS. JUSTICE FOR ALL. REGARDLESS OF WHO YOU ARE OF COLOR OR SEXUAL ORIENTATION. RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. WE BELIEVE THIS IS THE CATALYST FOR CHANGE FOR ALL PEOPLE. >> I WANT TO POST MY LAST QUESTION TO PROFESSOR JOYNER. I THINK YOU KNOW BETTER THAN PROBABLY MOST ABOUT DOCTOR KING'S QUOTE THAT THE ARC OF THE MORAL UNIVERSE IS LONG BUT IT BENDS TOWARD JUSTICE. THERE SEEMS TO BE SUCH THIS EFFORT OVER THE SUMMER FOR POLICE REFORM. RECENTLY IT SEEMS LIKE THAT HAS SLOWED DOWN. DO YOU THINK ENOUGH HAS BEEN DONE IN THAT EFFORT SINCE GEORGE FLOYD'S MURDER? WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE ABOUT THE PACE? >> THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CHANGES AROUND THE COUNTRY. BUT NOT ENOUGH. THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH. THEIR PURSUIT OF JUSTICE IS VERY INDIVIDUALIZED ON SOME SENSE. IT IS ALSO SYSTEMIC. YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE TOTAL SYSTEM AND WHETHER THE SYSTEM HAS RECOGNIZED THE ERROR OF ITS WAYS AND IS SEEKING TO CHANGE THAT. WHAT WE FIND ACROSS THE COUNTRY IS THAT THERE HAS NOT REALLY BEEN A CHANGE. EVERY INCIDENT LIKE THIS RESULTS IN PROTESTS AND DEMONSTRATIONS BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF TRUST. WHICH HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AS A RESULT OF THE HISTORY. DEALING WITH THESE TYPE OF CONFRONTATIONS. UNTIL WE GET TO THE BOTTOM OF ALL OF THIS, AND DEVELOP A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE CITIZENS, AND THAT THEY ARE TO BE PROTECTED AND THEY ARE TO BE SERVED WITHIN OUR CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS. THEN THE EFFORT TOWARD CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM IS GOING TO BE SLOW, TO SLOW TO BE IN THE ARC OF JUSTICE. >> WE ARE GOING TO KEEP HOPING FOR IT. PROFESSOR JOYNER. PROFESSOR FIELDS.
